The Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque is working to determine the reliability of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) These minute machines, imperceptible to the human eye are establish in computer game joysticks and car airbag sensors. But their use may expand if they are proven to be highly reliable.
Instrumentation designed by dint of Sandia's Reliability Physics Department and a physics-based predictive standard developed by Bill Miller, the department's manager, are being used to standard micromachine reliability.
